The word Digital for many is associated with E-commerce, payments, content and digital marketing. However, for enterprises Digital cuts across in a wider scope of things- right from enabling innovation in the work space to fostering collaboration among employees on various projects/tasks, manufacturing, Digital in supply chain & the sensors driven work etc. The digital phenomenon, the Cloud enabled applications and API driven services has facilitated employees & partners with a wide range of tools to collaborate and work in a more agile manner.

In our experience, we have found that employees not only look for collaboration with each other, but also with partners and store staff, particularly in the retail sector. The question therefore arises as to how one can create an environment that encourages all these interactions, and activities across different locations. An assortment of technologies is now available that solves this problem which is device agnostic, this is one of the reasons why we don’t have video conferencing rooms in our India offices.

Another important dimension associated with the digital phenomenon is enterprise security. The security policies and tools that are implemented by an organization must allow openness & flexibility rather than being obstructive, to allow run different use cases and thereby foster greater productivity. An enterprise thus leverage cutting edge security tools available to become smarter and more protected against internal/external vulnerabilities.

Important area of security is around data;as this is a very important asset to every function and has a lot of compliance surrounding it. So, there are efforts made to move the productivity data and host the same in cloud for online & offline access with tracking. While this mitigates some risks around data loss but provides a flexibility that employees now seek in the new millennial way of working.

IT's role in organizations today is considered to be heart of operations & strategic advantage than a mere backend enabler that was few years back. IT teams which were predominantly cost centric are now more transformation centered, with the cost acting as a tool to transform a particular process or business. Moreover, there are two very important dimensions to this role, which can be observed in most of the progressive companies. Firstly, IT has grown to be a very important stakeholder in business conversations. The second thing is that IT has been playing a crucial role in enabling the entire business chain to be much more productive & profitable, and is thus helping to facilitate the transformation in the digital world.

In today’s digital context it is the joint effort of every department to succeed in a marketplace and create right set of experiences to consumers and customers. In this endeavor IT is not limited just to one department it is a highly decentralized as an activity i.e everyone is in ITor IT is embedded in every function. Right from the sourcing team who sources the material, to the design team, the merchandise planning team, the supply chain, marketing and customercare.
